YOGA HISTORY
ENVER TIMOTHY SIRAIT G8 GRATEFUL TERUNA MUDA SECONDARY SCHOOL
Yoga's history stretches back thousands of years, originating in ancient India. The earliest evidence appears in the Indus Valley Civilization (c. 3000-1900 BCE), with seals depicting figures in yoga-like postures. The practice evolved through the Vedic period (c. 1500-500 BCE), where it was intertwined with rituals and philosophy.
The classical period (c. 200 BCE - 200 CE) saw Patanjali codify yoga in his Yoga Sutras, outlining the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, a system still widely practiced today. Over the centuries, various schools and traditions emerged, emphasizing different aspects of yoga, such as Hatha Yoga focusing on physical postures and breath.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, yoga began its journey to the West, largely through the efforts of Swami Vivekananda. It gained further popularity in the mid-20th century with teachers like B.K.S. Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois, who developed distinct styles. Today, yoga is a global phenomenon, practiced for its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits, with numerous modern adaptations and interpretations building upon its rich historical roots.
